At Rolleston Primary School, we use the Little Wandle Phonics Scheme.
At Rolleston Primary School, we have implemented Little Wandle (LW) a phonics scheme. Little Wandle is taught from the beginning of Foundation through to the beginning of Year 2. It is a whole class phonics programme that supports the phonetic needs of all our learners.
- This is a systematic and consistent approach which is taught for 20 minutes every day. The children are taught new sounds, tricky words and spellings. These strategies are then embedded in guided, shared reading and writing lessons.
- Keep up and Catch Up phonic interventions occur daily to ensure any gaps in knowledge are quickly identified and filled.
- Year 1 teach lessons twice a day to consolidate their daily sound.
- Our SEND provison (Rory’s Room) work on a sound every two weeks.
Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised has been built around the update (Department for Education – Letters and Sounds improving rates of progress 2021) that we were funded to produce by the Department for Education. This scheme draws on the latest research into how children learn best, retain their learning and provides children with the skills to become fluent, competent readers.
