Maths

Why is Maths important?

Mathematics equips pupils with the uniquely powerful set of tools to understand and change the world. These tools include logical reasoning, problem solving skills and the ability to think in abstract ways. Mathematics is important in everyday life. It is integral to all aspects of life and with this in mind we endeavour to ensure that children develop a positive and enthusiastic attitude towards mathematics that will stay with them.

At Rolleston Primary School, we are committed to:

  • Ensuring that pupils achieve mastery in the key concepts of mathematics, appropriate for their age group.
  • Encourage the effective use of maths as a tool in a wide range of activities within school and, subsequently, adult life.
  • Develop children’s ability to articulate their learning using correct mathematical language and vocabulary.
  • Develop ability to think clearly and logically with independence of thought and flexibility of mind.
  • Develop mathematical skills and knowledge and quick recall of basic facts in line with recommendations.
  • The planning of mathematics is progressive from EYFS to Year 6.
  • Use of manipulatives as a scaffold to learn new mathematical concepts with the understanding that pupils move away and become more independent learners.
  • To enable all children to achieve their full potential in Mathematics.

White Rose Maths (WRM)

Rolleston Primary school uses ‘White Rose Maths!’ (WRM) to facilitate high quality teaching and learning for maths at the school. The scheme of work follows a concrete, pictorial, abstract approach. Where appropriate, sentence stems and key questions are included alongside the key representations. White Rose divide the units into blocks of knowledge into a series of small learning step. The structure and pedagogy of this method are centred on a mastery approach to mathematics that achieves the outcomes of our intent. Pupils are provided with a variety of opportunities (i.e. manipulatives) to develop and extend their mathematical skills in and across each phase of education.

EYFS to Year 6

EYFS currently follow the mastering in number scheme. This is a scheme is from maths hub and rolls across 2 years. it concentrates on subitising and securing of number within EYFS. This is supplemented with WRM for any gaps in learning e.g. shape and measure.

Key Stages 1 and 2 use ‘White Rose Maths’ to facilitate high quality teaching and learning in the subject. Children provided with a rigorous and challenging scheme of work that ensures mastery of mathematical concepts that is underpinned by strong pedagogy. We adapt this scheme of work regularly and adapt our teaching and learning to meet the needs of all our learner. Teachers often apply ‘Golden Challenges’ for children capable of achieving greater depth. Key Stage One complete an additional maths session four times a week following the mastering in number scheme to secure basic fundamentals in maths.
