How we teach Music

Be Happy, Create Confidence and Strive for Success

At Rolleston Primary, we have curriculum drivers that support pupils to become:

  • Knowledgeable
  • Articulate
  • Ambitious and Aspirational
  • Creative
  • Resilient

Intent

At Rolleston Primary School, we are committed to providing every child with high-quality musical experiences that inspire, challenge and nurture their unique talents.

Through our diverse music provision – including weekly Rocksteady lessons, Year 4 guitar tuition, innovative clubs in sampling and turntablism, and our Year 4 choir events – we ensure all pupils develop musical skills, confidence and a lifelong love of music.

We believe music empowers our children to express themselves, collaborate with others, and celebrate the joy of performance. Every child at Rolleston will have the opportunity to explore different musical styles, learn instruments, and share their musical voice with our school community.

Implementation

At Rolleston, we use Kapow Primary’s Music scheme. This scheme takes a holistic approach to music, in which the individual strands below are woven together to create engaging and enriching learning experiences:
● Listening and evaluating
● Creating sound
● Notation
● Improvising and composing
● Performing

Each unit combines these strands within a cross-curricular topic designed to capture
pupils’ imagination and encourage them to explore music enthusiastically. Over the course of the
scheme, children will be taught how to sing fluently and expressively, and play tuned and untuned
instruments accurately and with control. They will learn to recognise, demonstrate and name the
interrelated dimensions of music - pitch, duration, tempo, timbre, structure, texture and dynamics -
and use these expressively in their own improvisations and compositions.

At Rolleston we are committed to safeguarding our children
